Gary and Sharon Powell

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Eph. 2:10 NIV

Answering God’s call brought us to San Salvador, El Salvador in August 1998 when Gary began managing the Princess Hotel. Although we did not know at the time exactly what He was calling us to or when; He made it known to us in October 2001, when we were lead to an abandoned house downtown where a lady was living with over 50 children. The conditions were deplorable and we did not feel like we could just walk away from the situation, especially since we knew God had us in El Salvador for His purpose. Over the ensuing months as we worked to change their plight it became evident that our efforts for the children would require a lifetime commitment and a huge dependence on God. We, along with a few others, decided to step out in faith and on May 18th, 2002 we opened the doors to La Casa de mi Padre, a home for children in crisis in El Salvador. After the financial crisis of November 2008, Gary left his position at the hotel in March of 2009. We felt God calling us to stay and go deep in His work at La Casa.

Currently, we are serving as fulltime missionaries co-directing the daily work of caring for the children as we seek to break the generational patterns of abuse by healing hearts, working to restore families and bringing hope for a better future. Our children live in homes with house-parents that model God’s love in the hopes that they too will desire this for their own family. We want to continually plant seeds of God’s grace and truth into each life and help them understand what it means to be His children.
